| A Highly Collectible
and Extremely Erotic Collection of Gay Art |
Peter Weiermair (Ed.) Treasures of Gay Art from the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation Contributors: Allen Elenzweig, James Saslow Full color. (pp 295), hard cover with dust jacket, € 59,95 |
Certainly the finest book of its kind, Treasures of Gay Art from the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation, this collection of gay erotic art, is an essential and gorgeous volume, one that you will cherish and enjoy. Not only is this book highly collectible, it’s extremely erotic. The seeds of the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation were planted in 1968 when Fritz Lohman and Charles Leslie held a gallery show of gay erotic art in their Soho loft. In 1990 they became a foundation dedicated to preserving art which many in the art world used to destroy. |

The first section of the book is devoted to paintings and drawings. Lest you
think this is some chaste, exclusive book one peers at with a monocle, check
out Ed Cervone’s Three Sailors (above right) - this three-way JO session
looks pretty hot. Or perhaps Patrick Angus’ Hanky Panky - set in a
porn movie house. Darold Perkins has taken an Arrow Shirt ad by J.C. Leyendecker
and turned it into a cock-sucking ad instead. |

Next in the Drawings and Prints section, the works by Paul Cadmus
are particularly appealing; he’s always been a favorite. The big shocker
are the explicit Andy Warhol drawings. Many people don’t even know that he
ever did hardcore sex drawings. They’re pretty good.... There’s a hot cum
shot on page 152 and more on 158 and 159.Treasures of Gay Art from the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation also contains drawings and paintings by, amongst many others, Neel Bate (a.k.a. Blade), Jean Boullet, Harry Bush, Jean Cocteau, Paul Dubois (a.k.a. Paul Smara), Tom of Finland, Peter Flinch, Jim French (a.k.a. Colt), Duncan Grant, Hans Kanters, Mel Odom, Dom Orejudos (a.k.a. Etienne), Roger Payne (a.k.a. Mark, a.k.a. Roger), Bill Schmeling (a..k.a The Hun), Pavel Tchelitchev, and Frank Webber (a.k.a. Bastille). |
The next section is photography. There are some familiar names mixed in with some unfamiliar - all are striking images. This part includes pictures by Mike Arlen, Bruce Bellas (a.k.a. Bruce of Los Angeles), Peter Berlin, Paul Blanca, Wilhelm van Gloeden, Charles Henri Ford, Alonzo James Hanagan (a.k.a. Lon of New York), Horst P. Horst, Peter Hujar, Robert Mapplethorpe, Walter Kundzicz, George Platt Lynes, Dave Martin, Wilhelm von Plüschow, Howard Roffman, Arthur Tress, and others. The last art section is a small collection of sculptures and objects, again with fascinating cocks and balls. |
|
One of the most interesting things about the book is that, rather than clutter the pages with a lot of words, the editor wrote copy about each item and artist in the back of the book. This is not a delicate art book - it’s a hot art book. No one has attempted to collect gay erotic art in a book on this scale before. Treasures of Gay Art from the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation has substance, guts and plenty of cum. |
