MATT ALBIANI LIFEGUARD ON DUTY To most of us beach bums, lifeguards look like vaunted kings in their wooden castles, lording over both our safety in the waves and our red-shorted nap-time fantasies. But to photographer Matt Albiani, they’re art. Albiani built his reputation shooting celebrity portraits and fashion spreads. For his first book, however, he trained his lens on a different class of beautiful people, one more rugged, less glamorous, and yet unassailably iconic: the American lifeguard.
A lifeguard himself in college, Albiani returned to the beaches of the U.S.
to wax visual poetic on the golden summer days of his youth. Lifeguard
on Duty collects the results of his years of travel across the country,
from Oahu, Hawaii to Nantucket, Massachusetts, capturing these brave men
in all their strength and solitude. With expressive framing and subtle composition,
Albiani creates a unique and elegant portrait of the life of a guard. 98
full-color photographs. (pp 124), hard cover, 46,95 |
BEAUTIFULMAG.EUBEAUTIFUL VISION Beauty is relative. And it must be relatively beautiful to work for the weblog beautifulmag.eu which is specialised in male nude photography. Since 2005 the Parisian duo behind that project browses magazines and the internet - always on the lookout for new talent whose work they can present on their website. The breathtaking variety of pictures that has been shown on their website so far makes clear that there is not one significant definition of beauty.
Beauty is rather something that’s not palpable, something that happens between
the photographer and the model, the viewer and the viewed. With the anthology
Beautiful Vision there is now a printed survey of the models
of beautifulmag.eu for the first time. About 250 pictures by thirty-seven
photographers from all over the world are assembled in this collction. And
whether you look at the bizarre and erotic work of Justin Monroe, the artfully
adapted pictures of Mark Henderson or the ingeniously staged photographs
of Eric Schwabel, each photographer strikes an individual note, each photo
moves you in its own way. (pp 260), hard cover, 29,95 |
NICOLAAS BIEGMANOIL WRESTLERS Oil wrestling, performed by ‘Pehlivans’, originated in Iran. It spread to Northern India, Pakistan, Turkey, and in the Balkans especially to Macedonia and adjoining areas. In Iran and Turkey it is a national sport. In the Balkans the tournaments mostly happen in remote villages at irregular times. The Pehlivans, who wear heavy leather breeches gathered in at the knee, smear themselves with oil. The champions are models of male virtues such as strength, stamina and honour within their communities. Their ideal diet is four kilos of meat and half a kilo of honey a day.
Nicolaas (Niek) Biegman, expert on islam and a former diplomat, was introduced
to the world of the Pehlivans by a prominent former Yugoslav wrestling coach,
which gave him the opportunity to photograph them during the last three months
of a prolonged stay in Macedonia. (pp 136), paper, 29,50 |

PAUL FREEMANOUTBACK: CURRAWONG CREEK If you are looking for a collection of stunningly beautiful photographs of men that move you and take you on a story-telling journey, and not just a bunch of pics of ‘hot’ guys in samey poses, Paul Freeman’s Outback: Currawong Creek is the book for you. This book continues Freeman’s photographic story of hardworking and intimate male camaraderie in the Australian rural heartland. Outback captures the imagination during a rollicking pictorial ‘boys own’ adventure in the parched farming landscape of Australia. The images in the Outback series reveal Freeman’s understanding that the erotic lives within the individual not the stereotype. Playful, candid and sexy, these men epitomise a spirit of outback Australia that fuses larrikin fantasy with moments of introspection that create a subtle counterpoint with the rugged beauty of the land. Scenes of mates cavorting naked in outback creeks lend a Bear Pond flavour to an Outback: Currawong Creek filled with drovers, farm-hands and cowboys, working and at play, a wonderful array of uniquely beautiful men in a breathtakingly beautiful country. WILHELM VON GLOEDEN, GUGLIELMO PLÜSCHOW, VINCENZO GALDIPARADIS SICILIEN. PAYSAGES, PORTRAITS, NUS 1890-1905 Paradis Sicilien contains a selection of photographs by three photographers who captured the beauty of Italian male youths in the 1890s and the early decades of the twentieth century. Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931) is a legendary figure who has become an integral part of the history of photography of the male nude. Around 1890 he star-ted photographing unclad youths in natural settings around Taormina and in his garden. He took care with them, covering their bodies with a perfumed oil mixture of his own making to give their skin a velvety appearance. Wilhelm Plüschow (who later Italianized his first name to Guglielmo), a cousin of Von Gloeden, arrived in Italy around 1870. He started his career as a photographer around 1875 in Naples, later moving to Rome. Plüschow met youths in Naples and Rome and invited them to his studio. These young Italians had no problem shedding their clothes, being proud of their bodies and pleased to show them off. His photographs are often composed, sophisticated, but seem more direct than those of his cousin, in looks, lasciviousness and sometimes in provocation. Plüschow's and Von Gloeden's contemporary Vincenzo Galdi is a photographer whose life is shrouded in mystery. Like Plüschow, with whom he started his career, he produced as many photographs of women as of men, but only the latter are reproduced in Paradis Sicilien. As far as young men are concerned, his photographs are generally more explicitly sexual. Edition limited to 1000 numbered copies. MENATPLAYREADY TO PLAY Anyone who thinks that erotic and work are words that don’t go together is for sure not familiar with the incredible business men of Menatplay. This porn label surprises its fans over and over again by introducing hunks - with muscles of steel and an overwhelmingly sexy look - who give a whole new meaning to the word top manager. Can anyone think of a better place to work than the ones offered here? During the meeting you can’t help but staring greedily at your supervisor’s muscles und his firmly stretched shirt. After discussing the recent balance sheets you bargain for who’s going to be today’s bottom. Ready to Play serves these fantasies without ever being stumpy or uninspired. And whether with a hard-on or not: Every single man in this book is a true gentleman. (pp 96), hard cover, 29,95 |
RAGING STALLIONTO THE LAST MAN To the Last Man is a cowboy romance of the finest. The photography is fascinatingly clear, the conscious decision against a studio grants an irresistible charm which has never been seen in adult photography before. The viewer feels as if he is sitting with these cowboys at the campfire - the idyll is electrifying. The men, burly, rough and heavy hung, exhibit a yearning and the need for tenderness. The photo book To the Last Man is the result of a two-week photo shoot for a porn flick with the same title - an erotic western, elaborate and ambitious as hardly any adult production has been before. It was shot in the remoteness of the Arizona Mountains and tells a story of violence and conflict as two rival gangs of cowboys fight it out to see who ends up on top - both literally and figuratively. HOWARD ROFFMANPRIVATE MOMENTS A tender and intimate look at the world of young men, unaffected, touching and beautiful. The pictures of Howard Roffman can easily convince with their naturalness, which makes them so unique and recognizable. When he worked together with the Slovakian porn label Bel Ami for the first time some years ago, the resulting photo book The Boys of Bel Ami was an outcome both stunning and surprising.
The cheeky and seducing charm of the Bel Ami guys and the matchless style
of Howard Roffman complemented each other just brilliantly. Now with Private
Moments there is finally a sequel to the successful project and one can’t
help but get the impression that Roffman has gone to the movies! The pictures
are provided with an infectious impression of power and vitality - not only
due to the fact that the Grand Master of black and white photography decided
to shoot in colour for the first time in his career of two decades.
The luxuriant landscape format in which the book is printed also offers completely
new possibilities to Roffman. And of course he is skilled in using them.
The boys of Bel Ami know how to stage their sexuality playfully; from slim
to sporty and muscular - everybody will find what he likes best. Roffman
photographs the guys on the set when they do their work, he follows them
when they have a fling at the lake and even when two of them back out for
a little something in the barn. This is a truly fantastic photo book - yearningly
and incredibly sexy - and it shines out even in Roffman’s oeuvre. (pp 240),

DYLAN ROSSERRED Signal color red! Red is the color of love and passion, the color of fire and blood, but also a color which says: Caution! Dylan Rosser opted for a really comprehensive project when he chose red to be the theme of his new photo book. It proves in an impressive way that Rosser is ranked among the big names of male nude photography for very good reasons. Dylan Rosser’s work is not simply about taking photos of the same kind of handsome bloke in varying setting. His models are sometimes hairy muscle hunks and sometimes slender youngsters, sometimes machos and sometimes tender seducers. There is nothing that distracts the attention away from them; they are always the focus of each picture. Rosser does not serve any preferences or fetishes. The beauty of maleness in all its facets is fetish enough to him. He creates pictures that accentuate the individual character of each man. This almost tangible intimacy is the biggest advantage in Rosser’s work. Red is a photo book as sensitive as it is expressive. (pp 120), hard cover with dust jacket, 39,95 |
SANDRO & MAYKSONENJOY Enjoy is inspired by the ideal of the male physique: perfect curves and anatomically well-shaped muscles are set in aesthetic environments. Sandro Mantovani (photographer and journalist, 24) und Maykson Ribet (art director, 25), Brazilians of Italian descent, are based in London and Milan for the past three years where they work for the fashion industry. Their credo: “We try to explore curves, muscle tones and, of course, an aesthetic context that enables us to explore the fetish of every scene. Our lives are full of fetishes and we should try to live up to them as much as we can - live freely with no strings attached!” Enjoy is the result of five years of creative work. (pp 96), hard cover, 29,95 |
DAVID VANCEHEAVENLY BODIES David Vance seeks to make his models appear like Greek statues - and succeeds with brilliance. Every picture is a piece of timeless art that you want to blow up and hang on your wall. More beautiful men from the photographer of the incredibly successful Timeless (2006) with one essential difference: Heavenly Bodies is shot in full color! (pp 112), hard cover, 29,95 |
PEDRO VIRGILGODS OF FOOTBALL Pedro Virgil’s highly stylized photographs depict football stars with bodies trained to perfection. In his previous book Gods of Sport he aesthetically “soiled” his models and placed them in magically dark surroundings; this time we see these superstars in naturally bright ambiences. His models are tight with tension, his photos are well thought out, composed, and styled - nothing is left to chance. Virgil has only one single aim: erotic tension. Even though his models never drop the last piece of clothing, one keeps hoping with the next turn of the page to see it all. Tension to the last page. (pp 144), hard cover with dust jacket, 49,95 |
FRANK WALDECKERTHE BOYS FROM IPANEMA There is no place in Brazil where so many attractive people can be found as on the beach of Ipanema. Whereas Brazilian women have always attracted a great deal of attention, the male of the species has languished in the shadows. It is high time to take a look at the Brazilian male “Latin lover.” Between 2001 and 2009 Frank Waldecker photographed a wide variety of men in and around Rio. An attractive face, a seductive smile and natural manliness were important factors when choosing models. Waldecker was chiefly attracted by a combination of natural sensuality with a kind of naïve playfulness very common among Brazilian men.
In Rio people love to show off their bodies, and work hard to keep them in
good shape. And people there are well aware that a skimpily clad body stimulates
the imagination better, and is far more erotic than total nudity. Waldecker’s
intention as a photographer was not to present the superficial beauty of
a perfect, well-trained body, but far more to reveal the person behind the
facade. That’s why his photographs communicate the famous Brazilian “alegria,”
the joyous spontaneity unique to Brazilian culture. 135 black and white photographs.
