AngelsVS  ANGELS IN AMERICA
Directed by
MIKE NICHOLS
Based on Tony Kusher's Pulitzer Prize-winning plays, Angels in America explores the politics, morality and search for hope and the story of six interconnected characters and an Angel in the complex and turbulent world of New York in the 1980s. The story centers around Prior Walter and Louis Ironson, a gay couple that falls apart when Prior grows ill as a result of AIDS. Louis, who doesn't cope well with disease and suggestions of mortality, leaves and starts a relationship with Joe Pitt, a closeted Mormon who works for Roy Cohn. Add in Joe's depressed and hallucinating wife Harper, his determined but open-minded mother Hannah, a fierce drag queen/nurse, and you've still only begun to discover the wealth of characters and storylines. The powerhouse cast (including Justin Kirk, Ben Shenkman, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, and many others) is uniformly superb. Two discs. Region Code 2. (Running time: 337 minutes) 48,95
BEAU TRAVAIL
Directed by CLAIRE DENIS
Inspired by Herman Melville's Billy Budd, filmmaker Claire Denis' Beau Travail is a stunning combination of literature, music, poetry and dance that explores the near mythical world of the French Foreign Legion. Denis Lavant stars as Galoup, a sergeant-major whose position and power are threatened when the bravery and heroism of new recruit Sentain (Grégoire Colin) attracts the attention of the platoon's commandant (Michel Subor). Enraged, Galoup plots Sentain's downfall, a doomed course of action that leads to his own undoing. Director Denis creates a dark mounting tension which underlies the exquisite cinematography of Agnès Godard, whose stark visual style contrasts vividly with the graceful training of the sculpted young soldiers. A powerful examination of masculinity, Beau Travail is mesmeric, sensual and extraordinarily beautiful. French with English subtitles. (Running time: 90 minutes) DVD Region Code 2, 43,75

bodywith.gif BODY WITHOUT SOUL
Directed by
WIKTOR GRODECKI
This movie delivers a slap in the face for all of us happy homosexuals who are living the comfortable Western gay lifestyle. While rent boys and porno models in the West can enjoy an  above-average income, their contemporaries in Eastern Europe have a very different story to tell. Body Without Soul grimly and graphically tells a tale that most of us would rather not hear or see. A selection of boys in their mid-teens tell their own stories - how they came to Prague and how they became seduced by the "easy money" of prostitution, which eventually led them into the world of hard-core porn. And in direct contrast to the boys' stories is that of Pavel, one of Prague's most prolific hard-core porn producers. On the set of Pavel's latest production, we witness first-hand the gruesome exploitation and abuse of these boys. We hear Pavel explain how hard it is for him to support his wife and children on the little he is paid by the Germans and the Americans for making his films. He explains why he has to use underage boys in his films, and also why he has to force them to have unprotected sex. English subtitles. Region Code 2. (Running time: 96 minutes) 39,95
friedman.gif CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS
Directed by
ANDREW JARECKI
The Friedmans are a respectable middle-class Long Island family, addicted to recording their daily lives - on super-8 in the early days, then later on videotape. But their world crumbles when the father, a respected teacher, is accused - along with the youngest of his three sons - of molesting schoolchildren. Unbelievably, the arrest, trial and its horrifying aftermath are all chronicled in the family's own home movies, and the result is a remarkable tangle of contradictions. Compelling and thought provoking, this multi award-winning documentary has captivated audiences the world over with its intimate exploration of emotionally-charged subject matter. Two discs. Region Code 2. (Running time: 253 minutes) 39,95

HustlerW.gif HUSTLER WHITE
Directed by BRUCE LA BRUCE
"An exploration of seedy Santa Monica Boulevard, the film stars model and Madonna video star Tony Ward as Monti, a hustler who becomes an object of obsession for out-of-towner Jürgen Anger (LaBruce). As Jürgen pursues Monti around the Boulevard, the film delves into the lives of other characters operating in the area, including a born again C&W singer, an aging masochist who gets off on razor blades, and Ron Athey as a mortician and snuff specialist. Most memorable are the hit-and-run victim and the amputee fetishist, who come together in a brief but tender scene. LaBruce confirms himself here as a subversive talent whose sensibilities, while shocking to some, are essentially comic and romantic." - i-D Magazine. raspberr.gif THE RASPBERRY REICH
Directed by
BRUCE LABRUCE
Bruce LaBruce's latst opus is a double-barrel blast of political sloganeering and hot sex! Offering a timely consideration of "terrorist chic," queer stalwart LaBruce (Hustler White, Skin Flick) returns with The Raspberry Reich, a shocking, wildly entertaining feature film. Shrill, militant Gudrun oversees a cell of cute, hunky extremists who pledge death to fascism. Determined to upend the bourgeoisie by any means necessary, Gudrun and her disciples extol the virtues of gay sex as an answer to hetero monogamy. Gudrun's disciples apply themselves rigorously to this principle, but are especially enthusiastic when ordered to kidnap and deflower the hot son of a capitalist pig - on film, no less! Pinpointing the sexual fascination that attaches itself to total outlaws, LaBruce brazenly elevates this mystique to dizzying heights. (Running time: 92 minutes) 49,90

SALÒ, O LE 120 GIORNATE DI SODOMA
Directed by PIER PAOLO PASOLINI
Pasolini's final and most controversial film has been banned, censored and reviled the world over since its first release. The film is based on the Marquis de Sade's novel 120 Days of Sodom, with the setting transposed to Mussolini's miniature Fascist Republic of Salò, Italy in 1944. The film's content and imagery is extreme, and it retains the power to shock, repel and distress a quarter of a century on. Salò remains a cinematic milestone - culturally significant, politically vital and visually stunning. Italian spoken with English subtitles. (Running time: 112 minutes) DVD 43,75

WESTLER
Directed by WIELAND SPECK
It is 1986: the Berlin Wall not only divides a city but also symbolises the division of the whole European continent. It has stood for twenty five years, it has divided families, friends, lovers and caused the deaths of countless people who tried to cross from East to West. Travelling the other way, from West to East is not too difficult, especially if you are from the West. And that's how they met, a tourist trip into another world and a chance meeting that was to change the lives of two young men, one from the West and the other trapped in the East of the Wall. Their love is intense and passionate but the wall stands between them, as does the East German government. But there is a way out, a secret and dangerous way to escape so that they can be together, a way that will lead to either freedom or death. Westler captures a moment in history and documents the underground gay world of East Berlin. In 1986 when the film was made it was an independent attempt to show the world gay life as it truly was within the divided city. Today it stands as a true classic of German cinema. German with English subtitles. (Running time: 94 minutes) DVD Region Code 2, 43,75
